The area in Clerkenwell at the time was not a particularly fashionable place to live and tended to be inhabited by tradesmen with their work often carried out in the ground floor or back yard of the house. No.80 St John Street is likely to have been built in the 1750s and was in continuous occupation until 1821 by two distillers who both lived and worked on the premises.
